چکیده
Photosynthetic light harvesting is a unique life process that occurs with amazing efficiency. Since the discovery of the structure of the bacterial peripheral light-harvesting complex (LH2), this process has been studied using a variety of advanced laser spectroscopic methods. We are now in a position to discuss the physical origins of excitation energy transfer and trapping in the LH2 and LH1 antennae of photosynthetic purple bacteria. We demonstrate that the time evolution of the state created by the light is determined by the combined action of excitonic pigment-pitment interactions, energetic disorder, and coupling to nuclear motion in a pigment-protein complex. A quantitative fit of experimental data using Redfield theory allowed us to determine the pathways and time scales of exciton and vibrational relaxation and analyze separately different contributions to the measured transient absorption dynamics. Furthermore, these dynamics were observed to be strongly dependent on the excitation wavelength. A numerical fit of this dependence turns out to be extremely critical to a variation of the structure and disorder parameters and, therefore, can be used as a test for different antenna models (disordered ring, elliptical deformations, correlated disorder, etc.). The calculated equilibration dynamics in the exciton basis allow a visualization of the exciton motion using a density matrix picture in real space.

Light harvesting by LH1 and LH2 antenna proteins in the photosynthetic membranes of purple bacteria has been extensively studied in recent years for the fundamental understanding of the energy transfer dynamics and mechanism. The remarkable rotational symmetry of the photosynthetic antenna complexes of purple bacteria has long been thought to enhance their light harvesting and excitation energy transport. We study the role of symmetry by modeling hypothetical antennas whose symmetry is broken by altering the orientations of the bacteriochlorophyll pigments. We find that in both LH2 and LH1 complexes, symmetry increa...

Light absorption and the subsequent transfer of excitation energy are the first two steps of the photosynthetic process, carried out by protein-bound pigments, mainly bacteriochlorophylls (BChls), in photosynthetic bacteria. BChls are anchored in light-harvesting (LH) complexes, such as light-harvesting complex I (LH1), which directly associates with the reaction center (RC), forming the RC-LH1...
متن کاملTracking energy transfer between light harvesting complex 2 and 1 in photosynthetic membranes grown under high and low illumination.
Energy transfer (ET) between B850 and B875 molecules in light harvesting complexes LH2 and LH1/RC (reaction center) complexes has been investigated in membranes of Rhodopseudomonas palustris grown under high- and low-light conditions. In these bacteria, illumination intensity during growth strongly affects the type of LH2 complexes synthesized, their optical spectra, and their amount of energet...
متن کاملRole of an elliptical structure in photosynthetic energy transfer: Collaboration between quantum entanglement and thermal fluctuation
Recent experiments have revealed that the light-harvesting complex 1 (LH1) in purple photosynthetic bacteria has an elliptical structure. Generally, symmetry lowering in a structure leads to a decrease in quantum effects (quantum coherence and entanglement), which have recently been considered to play a role in photosynthetic energy transfer, and hence, elliptical structure seems to work agains...
